I love Robinson’s Gilead as much as the next over-educated Christian, but it’s wild how often people miss that the ending of the book reveals it’s been a moral tragedy the whole time. Ames is a synecdoche for Iowa’s bucolic forgetfulness of its past rage for racial justice!
