in the James Ellroy canon, MLK was supposed to be killed by James Earl Ray but when he got the yips, 2nd shooter Freddy Otash did the deed. Otash, as of course you all know, was the inspiration for one Jake Gittes. Makes you wonder about those rueful allusions to that opaque place/time, "Chinatown"
